Why play online poker?
It is not a question one comes across often. That’s because online poker has swept the minds of people across the globe and is no longer a mystery. Popularized by the World Series of Poker and glamorized by James Bond, poker has become the most played online game in cyberspace today. Whether it is a 20-something or a 75-year old, Texas Hold’em has found enthusiasts across the age spectrum.
Why do people love it?
And why not, we say. It is one of the simplest games one can ever play. The rules are extremely straightforward and to the point. Comprehension is quick and players can start playing as soon as they have some practice sessions under their belt. But you must keep in mind that it takes a long time to become a master of the game. You have to have played hundreds of games where you have applied strategies that have won you the pot, to get to that level.
How do you play?
The mechanics of Texas Hold’em poker are very clear cut. The game follows a similar and uncomplicated pattern every time. At the start of the game, every player is dealt two cards. These are private cards and are dealt face down. Once this is done, each player is allowed to place bets on the cards he/she has received. This can be done either by viewing the cards and placing bets or just placing blinds if that is a player’s decision. Other players can call these bets, raise them, or just fold depending upon the kind of hand they have received. Once this round of betting finishes, three community cards are dealt.
This means they are laid out on the table facing upwards. These cards have to shared by all the players. Each one now has to make the best hand they can using the three community cards and the two individual cards they have. More betting follows this round. Then another card is dealt face upwards into the community pile. Again, the players have to make the best hand they can with the cards they have at their disposal and place bets. This process will carry on till a fifth card is put onto the community pile. The last round of betting commences after this following which each player displays the hand they have made. The winner is the one with the best hand and gets to take home all the money put into the pot during the game.
How can you get better?
This is no rocket science. As in any other game or sport, only practice can make a player better and even perfect one day. But till that time, one needs to keep on playing consistently, while picking up on strategies used not just by themselves but by opponents as well. It does not matter who the strategy belongs to, the point is that you should know how to use it so that you can win the jackpot.
